Kristen E. Pappano

Kris is an experienced Domestic and Foreign Trademark Prosecution Paralegal, responsible for managing many of the Firm’s worldwide trademark portfolios. She has over 28 years’ experience in brand management and trademark prosecution.

Prior to joining Pattishall, she worked in-house at Bell Atlantic where she assisted in the clearance and later filing of marks for the now well-known VERIZON brand. She has extensive experience in performing searches to clear trademarks for use or registration, including searches on Saegis, foreign trademark databases, and the Internet. Her Saegis experience is second-to-none, as she was one of the original beta testers of the search platform before it was introduced years ago.

She understands and directs complex USPTO and international filing projects from concept to completion. For example, she recently filed an unusual U.S. trademark application with joint applicants and then handled the foreign filing of these applications, where joint applicant filings have varied requirements. She has managed the recordation with various foreign Patent and Trademark Offices to record chain of title issues relating to assignments, mergers, and names changes throughout the world for various large clients.

With her many years of experience, Kris understands how to get things done. She knows what can and cannot be done, what needs to be filed and where to do so in order to achieve the desired results. Kris has also built relationships with the staff of the U.S. Trademark Office, U.S. Copyright Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and knows whom to contact and for what. The end result: your work is done at a lower billing rate with no wasted time.

Another government agency Kris deals with is the U.S. Department of the Treasury – Office of Foreign Assets Control regarding U.S. Sanctions against foreign countries. Sanctions affect clients who are filing trademark applications, renewals, or oppositions in sanctioned countries and paying of associate fees. The U.S. Treasury provides current information on the sanctions in effect, and the actions U.S. companies are permitted to take in sanctioned countries. She coordinates with Treasury to determine what our client is allowed to do legally in that country. Each case has to be approached individually because the sanctions change frequently and have different impact depending on what the client offers or sells.

Kris still loves to learn, test new products, and grow as new developments occur in the field of IP law. She is recognized as a researcher who can find the proverbial needle in a haystack. She freely admits that she is a research “geek” and still has an active library card!
